Scanner Notes
This section covers my scanning process which may be helpful for others who are interested in getting into this hobby. Just when I think I have the process dialed in I often learn something new. Like everything in life the answer is almost always a it depends. If you are scanning something which is not yet available online there is no wrong way to do it. Your copy is going to be the best. If you have something that has already been scanned, then the question is can you make something better? There are many variables and it’s not always the best option to simply scan at 600+ DPI or descreen everything. Vintage magazines from prior to the mid-80’s do not have the detail to begin with to benefit from high DPI scans.
An excellent resource for beginners is Scanning.guide. I also try to incorporate the Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative as much as possible.
